끝으로, 사람들이 단계에 대한 이해가 없어 지금까지 모르고 있는, 세 천국의 천사들에 관한 다음과 같은 비의(秘義, arcanum)를 이제 알릴 수 있게 되었다. 모든 천사와 사람에게는 예외 없이 가장 내적인 단계, 즉 가장 높은 단계가 있다. 이 단계로 주님의 신성이 가장 먼저, 즉 가장 내밀하게 유입되고, 거기서부터 단계적 순서대로 내면이 배열된다. 이 가장 내적인, 즉 가장 높은 단계는 천사와 사람에게 주님이 들어가시는 문, 또는 그들 안에 있는 주님만의 처소라 부를 수 있다. 사람이 사람인 것은 바로 가장 내적인 최고단계를 지니고 있기 때문이다. 사람이 동물과 다른 이유도 동물에게는 이 단계가 없기 때문이다. 이 단계가 있기 때문에, 사람은 동물과 달리 정신(mind)과 의식(disposition, character)의 내면성이 주님에 의해 주께로 고양될 수 있다. 또한 이 단계가 있기 때문에, 사람은 주님을 믿을 수 있고, 주님을 향한 사랑으로 감화될 수 있으며, 그 결과 주님을 볼 수 있다. 또 지성과 지혜를 받고, 합리적으로 말할 수도 있는 것이다. 사람이 영원히 사는 것도 이 단계가 있기 때문이다. 그러나 이 가장 내밀한 곳에 주께서 무엇을 갖추어 두셨고, 공급하시는지는 어떤 천사도 감지할 수 없다. 이는 천사의 생각과 지혜를 초월하기 때문이다. Finally, a certain arcanum respecting the angels of the three heavens, which has not hitherto come into anyone’s mind, because degrees have not been understood, may be related. In every angel and also in every man there is an inmost or highest degree, or an inmost or highest something, into which the Divine of the Lord primarily or proximately flows, and from which it disposes the other interiors in him that follow in accordance with the degrees of order. This inmost or highest degree may be called the entrance of the Lord to the angel or man, and his veriest dwelling place in them. It is by virtue of this inmost or highest that a man is a man, and is distinguished from irrational animals, for these do not have it. From this it is that man, unlike the animals, is capable, in respect to all his interiors which pertain to his mind and disposition, of being raised up by the Lord to himself, of believing in the Lord, of being moved by love to the Lord, and thereby beholding him, and of receiving intelligence and wisdom, and speaking from reason. Also, it is by virtue of this that he lives to eternity. But what is arranged and provided by the Lord in this inmost does not distinctly flow into the perception of any angel, because it is above his thought and transcends his wisdom.
