※ ‘딸들’(daughters)이 그런 사람의 의지 안에 거주하는 것들, 그래서 결과적으로는 갈망, 욕망을 상징한다는 것

1절, 사람이 땅 위에 번성하기 시작할 때에 그들에게서 딸들이 나니 And it came to pass that man began to multiply himself upon the faces of the ground, and daughters were born unto them.

‘딸들’(daughters)이 그런 사람의 의지 안에 거주하는 것들, 그래서 결과적으로는 갈망, 욕망을 상징한다는 것은, 그동안 ‘자녀들’(sons and daughters) 관련, 앞장에서 다루어 온 내용들(AC.489-491, 창5:4)을 보면 분명하며, 거기서 ‘아들들’(sons)은 진리를, ‘딸들’(daughters)은 선을 각각 상징합니다. That “daughters” signify such things as are of the will of that man, consequently yearnings, is evident from what was said and shown concerning “sons and daughters” in the preceding chapter (Gen. 5:4), where “sons” signify truths, and “daughters,” goods.

아담은 셋을 낳은 후 팔백 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며 (창5:4)

‘딸들’, 혹은 선은 의지에 속합니다. 그러나 사람이 그런 사람이면 그의 인식능력도, 그의 의지도 그렇습니다. 그래서 그런 것이 ‘자녀들’입니다. “Daughters,” or goods, are of the will, but such as a man is, such is his understanding and such his will, thus such are the “sons and daughters.”

※ 즉, 우리의 지적 능력과 의지가 어떤 모습일지는 우리의 캐릭터가 결정한다는 것입니다. 그런 식으로, 우리의 ‘자녀들’ 또한 결정된다는 것입니다.

본문에서 다루는 사람은 부패한 상태입니다. 이런 사람은 의지랄 게 없으며, 대신 원색적 욕망만 있습니다. 이들은 이런 걸 의지로 여기며, 실제로 그렇게 부릅니다. 어떤 것에 대한 설명은 설명하고 있는 그것의 퀄러티와 일치합니다. 여기서 딸들이 설명하고 있는 사람은 앞서 지금까지 죽 설명해 온 대로 부패한 사람입니다. (cf. AC.560, 562-563, 565) ‘딸들’은 의지 안에 있는 것을 상징합니다. 하지만, 그 안에 선을 위한 게 전혀 없으면, 그때는 갈망(渴望, yearnings)을 상징하게 되며, ‘아들들’은 이해하는 능력(understanding) 안에 있는 것을 상징합니다. 하지만, 그 안에 진리에 관한 이해가 전혀 없으면, 그때는 환상(fantasies)을 상징합니다. 왜 이런가 하는 것은, 성(sex)의 본성 때문입니다. 여성은 태생적으로 의지나 탐욕(cupidity)이 이해하는 능력(understanding)을 다스리게 되어 있습니다. 여성의 몸 모든 섬유조직이 다 이런 기질(disposition), 이런 성향이며, 이것이 여성의 본성인 반면, 남성은 지성(intellect) 또는 이성(reason)이 우위를 나타내는 식으로 되어 있습니다. 남성의 몸 모든 섬유조직이 다 이런 기질, 이런 성향이며, 이것이 남성의 본성입니다. 두 사람 간 결혼이 그래서 각 사람 안의 의지와 이해하는 능력(understanding) 간 결혼과 비슷한 것입니다. 오늘날엔 선을 위한 의지는 없고, 대신 탐욕(cupidity)만 있으며, 약간의 지성(intellectual)이나 이성(rational)만 가능한데, 이것이 바로 유대교회에 있는 그 많은 법들이 왜 남편의 특권(prerogative)과 아내의 복종(obedience)에 관한 것인지 하는 이유가 되겠습니다. The present passage treats of man in a corrupt state, who has no will, but mere cupidity instead of will, which is supposed by him to be will, and is also so called. What is predicated is in accordance with the quality of the thing whereof it is predicated, and that the man of whom the daughters are here predicated was a corrupt man, has been shown before. The reason why “daughters” signify the things of the will, and, where there is no will of good, yearnings; and why “sons” signify the things of the understanding, and, where there is no understanding of truth, fantasies, is that the female sex is such, and so formed, that the will or cupidity reigns in them more than the understanding. Such is the entire disposition of their fibers, and such their nature, whereas the male sex is so formed that the intellect or reason rules, such also being the disposition of their fibers and such their nature. Hence the marriage of the two is like that of the will and the understanding in every man; and since at this day there is no will of good, but only cupidity, and still something intellectual, or rational, can be given, this is why so many laws were enacted in the Jewish church concerning the prerogative of the husband [vir], and the obedience of the wife.

여기 ‘사람’[homo, man]은 그 시절 존재하던 인류를 상징합니다. ‘땅 위’(the faces of the ground)는 교회가 있던 모든 지역을 상징합니다. 여기 ‘딸들’(daughters)은 그 사람의 의지에 속하는 것들, 결과적으로 갈망(yearnings), 욕망을 상징합니다. By “man” [homo] is here signified the race of mankind existing at that time. By the “faces of the ground” is signified all that tract where the church was. By “daughters” are here signified the things appertaining to the will of that man, consequently yearnings.
