24절, 가인을 위하여는 벌이 칠 배일진대 라멕을 위하여는 벌이 칠십칠 배이리로다 하였더라 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

이 말씀들의 의미는, 그들은 신성불가침(sacrilege, sacred ban)이었던 ‘가인’ 신앙을 폭행, 소멸시켰고, 동시에 신앙을 통해 생겨나야 했던, 훨씬 더 신성불가침(sacrosanct)인 체어리티 또한 소멸시켰다는 것입니다. 그래서 이런 이유로, 지옥, 곧 ‘칠십칠 배의 벌’이 있게 된 것입니다. These words signify that they had extinguished the faith meant by “Cain,” to do violence to which was sacrilege, and at the same time had extinguished the charity which should be born through faith, a far greater sacrilege, and that for this there was condemnation, that is, a “seventy and sevenfold avengement.”
