그들이 그렇게 자기들끼리만 따로 지내며 가족들, 가문들 및 민족들로만 구별된 이유는, 이것이 교회 전체의 보존을 의미하기 때문이며, 모든 가족과 가문이 그들의 어른들의 결정을 따를 수 있어야 사랑과 참된 예배 안에 머무를 수 있기 때문입니다. 각 가족마다 다른 모든 가족과 구별되는 특이한 천성들이 있었다는 점 또한 인상적입니다. 자녀들, 심지어 먼 후손들까지도 그들의 부모들로부터 어떤 특이한 천성들, 곧 그들의 얼굴 생김새 및 다른 많은 특징들을 가지고 구별될 수 있도록 그런 독특한 특징들을 물려받는다는 것은 잘 알려진 사실이기 때문입니다. 이런 이유로, 서로 뒤섞이는 대신 정확히 구별될 수 있도록 그들이 이런 식으로 거주하는 것을 주님은 기뻐하셨습니다. 이렇게 교회는 주님의 나라(the kingdom of the Lord)에 대한 살아있는 일종의 표상(表象, representative)이었습니다. 주님의 나라에는 사람들의 그룹들(societies, groups of people)이 셀 수 없이 많으며, 각각의 그룹들은 그들의 사랑과 신앙에 따라 다른 모든 그룹들과 구별되기 때문입니다. 이것이 앞에서 관찰한 것처럼, ‘혼자 사는 것’(living alone)(cf. AC.139, 창2:18), 그리고 ‘장막에 거주함’(dwelling in tents)(cf. AC.414, 창4:20)이 의미하는 것입니다. 또한 같은 이유로, 주님은 유대교회가 가족, 가문 및 민족으로 구별되며, 그래서 모두가 자기 친족 가운데서만 결혼하기를 기뻐하신 것입니다. 이에 관해서는 주님의 신적 자비로 나중에 말씀드리겠습니다. The reason why they dwelt thus alone by themselves, distinguished only into houses, families, and nations, was that by this means the church might be preserved entire, that all the houses and families might be dependent on their parent, and thereby remain in love and in true worship. It is to be remarked also that each house was of a peculiar genius, distinct from every other; for it is well known that children, and even remote descendants, derive from their parents a particular genius, and such marked characteristics that they can be distinguished by the face, and by many other peculiarities. Therefore, in order that there might not be a confounding, but an exact distinction, it pleased the Lord that they should dwell in this manner. Thus the church was a living representative of the kingdom of the Lord; for in the Lord’s kingdom there are innumerable societies, each one distinct from every other, according to the differences of love and faith. This, as observed above, is what is meant by “living alone,” and by “dwelling in tents.” For the same reason also it pleased the Lord that the Jewish church should be distinguished into houses, families, and nations, and that everyone should contract marriage within his own family; but concerning this, of the Lord’s Divine mercy hereafter.
