각 공동체는 보다 작은 형태의 천국이고, 

각 천사는 가장 작은 형태의 천국이다

Each Society Is a Heaven in a Smaller Form,

and Each Angel in the Smallest Form

다시 말하지만, 천국은 주님을 확실히 알고, 주님을 믿고, 주님을 사랑하는 곳이다. 공동체마다 선이 각기 달라서 주님을 예배하는 형태도 다양한데, 이것은 해롭지 않고, 오히려 유익하다. 천국의 완벽함은 다양성에서 비롯되기 때문이다. 이해를 돕기 위해서 식자층에서 널리 쓰는 용어를 빌어 설명해야 하겠다. 통일체는 다양한 구성 요소들로 이루어져야 완벽하다. 모든 통일체는 다양성을 기초로 존재가 성립되며, 다양한 요소들로 구성되지 않은 통일체란 아무 것도 아닌 것이다. 형태도 없고, 따라서 특성도 없다. 이와 반대로, 한 통일체가 다양한 구성 요소들로 이루어져 있고, 그 요소들이 마치 마음 잘 맞는 친구들처럼 각각 서로 연합해 완벽한 형태를 갖추고 있으면, 질적으로 완벽해지는 것이다. 그러므로 천국은 다양한 부분들이 모여 가장 완벽한 형태를 이루어 낸 통일체다. 천국의 형태는 모든 형태 중 가장 완벽한 것이기 때문이다. 그것이 모든 완벽성의 근원임은, 마음과 감각에 느껴지는 모든 아름다움, 즐거움, 기쁨을 보면 분명히 알 수 있다. 오직 일치되고 조화되는 많은 부분들이 협력과 화합으로 질서정연하게 공존하며 흐를 때에만 아름다움과 즐거움이 생기는 것이지, 다채로움 없는 단조로운 것은 아름답지도 즐겁지도 않기 때문이다. 그래서 ‘다양해야 재미있다’고들 하고, ‘그 즐거움은 다양성의 특질에 따라 결정된다’고도 하는 것이다. 이로 미루어 천국에서도 다양성이 완벽성을 이룬다는 것을 거울 보듯이 알 수 있다. 지상에 존재하는 것은 영계의 실상을 거울처럼 비쳐주기 때문이다.주53 Again, heaven is where the Lord is acknowledged, believed in, and loved. Variety in worship of the Lord from the variety of good in different societies is not harmful, but beneficial, for the perfection of heaven is therefrom. This can scarcely be made clear to the comprehension without employing terms that are in common use in the learned world, and showing by means of these how unity, that it may be perfect, must be formed from variety. Every whole exists from various parts, since a whole without constituents is not anything; it has no form, and therefore no quality. But when a whole exists from various parts, and the various parts are in a perfect form, in which each attaches itself like a congenial friend to another in series, then the quality is perfect. So heaven is a whole from various parts arranged in a most perfect form, for the heavenly form is the most perfect of all forms. That this is the ground of all perfection is evident from the nature of all beauty, agreeableness and delight, by which the senses and the mind are affected; for these qualities spring and flow from no other source than the concert and harmony of many concordant and congenial parts, either coexisting in order or following in order, and never from a whole without many parts. From this is the saying that variety gives delight; and the nature of variety, as is known, is what determines the delight. From all this it can be seen as in a mirror how perfection comes from variety even in heaven. For from the things that exist in the natural world the things of the spiritual world can be seen as in a mirror.53

 

 

주53. 모든 완전체는 많은 부분들의 하모니와 콘서트에서 온다. 그렇지 않으면, 전혀 무슨 퀄러티라는 걸 가질 수 없다. Every whole is from the harmony and concert of many parts. Otherwise it has no quality (n. 457). 이런 사실로, 천국 전체가 하나의 완전체다. From this the entire heaven is a whole (n. 457). 그리고 거기 있는 모든 건 주님이라는 한가지 목적에만 유념하기 때문이다. And for the reason that all there have regard to one end, which is the Lord (n. 9828).
