There Is a Correspondence of Heaven with All Things of the Earth

상응 지식과 그 용도에 대해 한 가지 언급할 것이 있다. 앞에서 밝혔듯, 영계, 즉 천국은 상응에 의해 자연계와 결합한다. 그러므로 상응을 통해서 사람은 천국과 교류할 수 있도록 허용된 것이다. 천국의 천사는 사람이 하듯 자연적인 것을 생각하지 않는다. 따라서 사람은 상응 지식이 있으면 그 마음속 생각은 천사들과 함께할(to be associated with) 수 있고, 따라서 그의 속(영적) 사람은 천사와 연합할(to be conjoined with) 수 있다. 천국과 사람이 결합되게 하기 위해서 성경은 순전히 상응으로 기록되었다. 즉 성경 안의 모든 말씀은 전체적으로나 세부적으로나 상응인 것이다.주84 따라서 만약 사람이 상응에 대한 지식이 있으면 성경 말씀의 영적 의미를 이해할 수 있을 것이며, 그 결과, 문자적 의미로는 알 수 없었던 비의(秘義)를 알 수 있을 것이다. 성경에는 문자의 의미와 영적 의미가 있다. 문자의 의미는 세상에 속한 것으로, 영적 의미는 천국에 속한 것으로 이루어져 있다. 천국과 세상의 결합이 상응을 통해 이루어지기 때문에, 그 한 획에 이르기까지(down to the least jot) 세밀하게 상응으로 이루어진 성경 말씀이 주어진 것이다.주85 Something shall now be said about the knowledge of correspondences and its use. It has been said above that the spiritual world, which is heaven, is conjoined with the natural world by means of correspondences; therefore by means of correspondences communication with heaven is granted to man. For the angels of heaven do not think from natural things, as man does; but when man has acquired a knowledge of correspondences he is able, in respect to the thoughts of his mind, to be associated with the angels, and thus in respect to his spiritual or internal man to be conjoined with them. That there might be such a conjunction of heaven with man the Word was written wholly by correspondences, each thing and all things in it being correspondent.84 If man, therefore, had a knowledge of correspondences he would understand the spiritual sense of the Word, and from that it would be given him to know arcana of which he sees nothing in the sense of the letter. For there is a literal sense and there is a spiritual sense in the Word, the literal sense made up of such things as are in the world, and the spiritual sense of such things as are in heaven. And such a Word, in which everything down to the least jot is a correspondence, was given to men because the conjunction of heaven with the world is effected by means of correspondences.85
