※ ‘라멕’의 속뜻, 황폐함(vastation), 즉 어떤 신앙도 남아 있지 않음

19절, 라멕이 두 아내를 맞이하였으니 하나의 이름은 아다요 하나의 이름은 씰라였더라 And Lamech took unto him two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

‘라멕’의 의미가 황폐함, 즉 어떤 신앙도 남아 있지 않음이라는 것이 분명한 것은 이어지는 23, 24절을 보면 알 수 있는데요, 거기 보면, ‘나의 상처로 말미암아 내가 사람을 죽였고 나의 상함으로 말미암아 소년을 죽였도다’ 하고 있기 때문입니다. 거기 ‘사람’은 신앙, ‘어린아이’ 혹은 ‘소년’은 체어리티(charity, 이웃 사랑)이기 때문입니다. That by “Lamech” is signified vastation, or that there was no faith, is evident from the following verses (23–24), in which it is said that he “slew a man to his wounding, and a little one to his hurt”; for there, by a “man” is meant faith, and by a “little one” or “little child,” .

23라멕이 아내들에게 이르되 아다와 씰라여 내 목소리를 들으라 라멕의 아내들이여 내 말을 들으라 나의 상처로 말미암아 내가 사람을 죽였고 나의 상함으로 말미암아 소년을 죽였도다 24가인을 위하여는 벌이 칠 배일진대 라멕을 위하여는 벌이 칠십칠 배이리로다 하였더라 (창4:23, 24)

가인으로부터 순서상 여섯 번째인 ‘라멕’은 황폐함(vastation)을 상징합니다. 더이상 어떤 신앙도 남아있지 않게 되었을 때의 상태이지요. 그의 ‘두 아내’는 일종의 새로운 교회의 도래를 의미하는데, ‘아다’는 그 교회의 천적 영적인 것들의 어머니를, 그리고 ‘씰라’는 자연적인 것들의 어머니를 의미합니다. By “Lamech,” who was the sixth in order from Cain, is signified vastation, in consequence of there being no longer any faith; by his “two wives” is signified the rise of a new church; by “Adah,” the mother of its celestial and spiritual things; and by “Zillah,” the mother of its natural things.

이 이름들은 모두 ‘가인’이라 하는 첫 이단에서 유래된 이단들을 말합니다. 이들에 관해서는 이름들밖에는 현존하는 아무것도 없기 때문에, 이들에 대해 무슨 언급을 하는 건 적절치 않아 보입니다. 이 이름들의 기원들을 가지고 뭔가 건질 수도 있을 것 같은데요, 예를 들면, ‘이랏’은 ‘성의 후손’이라는 것, 그렇다면 ‘에녹’이라는 이단에서 비롯되었나? 뭐 그런 것입니다. All these names signify heresies derived from the first, which was called “Cain”; but as there is nothing extant respecting them, except the names, it is unnecessary to say anything about them. Something might be gathered from the derivations of the names; for example, “Irad” means that he “descends from a city,” thus from the heresy called “Enoch,” and so on.

이 에녹으로부터 샘처럼 솟아난 이단들 역시 저마다 자기들의 이름들이 있고, 그 끝에 있는 라멕, 이 라멕이라는 이단은 남아있는 신앙이 전혀 없었습니다. (18절) The heresies that sprang from this one are also called by their names, in the last of which, called Lamech, there was nothing of faith remaining. (verse 18)
