24-25절, 24하나님이 이르시되 땅은 생물을 그 종류대로 내되 가축과 기는 것과 땅의 짐승을 종류대로 내라 하시니 그대로 되니라 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living soul after its kind; the beast, and the thing moving itself, and the wild animal of the earth, after its kind; and it was so. 25하나님이 땅의 짐승을 그 종류대로, 가축을 그 종류대로, 땅에 기는 모든 것을 그 종류대로 만드시니 하나님이 보시기에 좋았더라 And God made the wild animal of the earth after its kind, and the beast after its kind, and everything that creepeth on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.

태고 시대(太古, the most ancient times)를 살았던 사람들은 이해와 의지에 관련된 것들을 이런 식으로 의미했는데요, 이런 이유로, 선지서들과 구약 말씀에서도 늘 여러 종류의 동물들을 가지고 같은 걸 표현하고 있습니다. 짐승은 두 종류가 있는데, 사람들을 해치는 짐승은 악하다 하고, 해를 끼치지 않는 짐승은 선하다 합니다. 사람에게 있는 악들은 악한 짐승들, 가령, 곰, 늑대, 개 등으로 표현하는 반면, 선하고 온순한 것들은 같은 본성을 가진 짐승들, 가령, 어린 암소, 양, 어린 양 등으로 합니다. 여기에 언급된 ‘짐승들’(beasts)은 선하고 온순한 것들이며, 그래서 애정들(affections)을 의미하는데요, 이 본문은 거듭나고 있는 사람들을 다루고 있기 때문입니다. 사람의 더 낮은 것들, 즉 몸(body)과 더 연결된 것들은 ‘땅의 짐승들’(wild animals of that earth)이라 하는데, 이는 탐욕들과 쾌락들을 말합니다. Those who lived in the most ancient times thus signified the things relating to the understanding and to the will; and therefore in the prophets, and constantly in the Word of the Old Testament, the like things are represented by different kinds of animals. Beasts are of two kinds; the evil, so called because they are hurtful; and the good, which are harmless. Evils in man are signified by evil beasts, as by bears, wolves, dogs; and the things which are good and gentle, by beasts of a like nature, as by heifers, sheep, and lambs. The “beasts” here referred to are good and gentle ones, and thus signify affections, because it here treats of those who are being regenerated. The lower things in man, which have more connection with the body, are called “wild animals of that earth,” and are cupidities and pleasures.
