AC.64, 창1 뒤, ‘천사들이 말씀을 읽는 방식’(AC.64-65)

※ 이것이 말씀의 속뜻, 즉 겉 글자의 뜻으로는 전혀 나타나지 않는, 말씀의 생명 그 자체(its veriest life)입니다. 그런데 이 아르카나(arcana, 秘義, 말씀에 담긴, 주님이 숨겨놓으신 의미)는 너무나 엄청나 이 정도의 볼륨들 가지고는 그 속에 담긴 것을 도저히 다 담아낼 수 없을 정도입니다.

이것이 말씀의 속뜻, 즉 겉 글자의 뜻으로는 전혀 나타나지 않는, 말씀의 생명 그 자체(its veriest life)입니다. 그런데 이 아르카나(arcana, 秘義, 말씀에 담긴, 주님이 숨겨놓으신 의미)는 너무나 엄청나 이 정도의 볼륨들 가지고는 그 속에 담긴 것을 도저히 다 담아낼 수 없을 정도입니다. 여기서는 아주 조금만 제시하는데요, 그러나 이것만 가지고도 여기서 다루고 있는 게 거듭남이며, 거듭남이란 겉 사람에서 속 사람으로 진행되는 것이라는 사실을 확실히 아실 수 있을 겁니다. 천사들이 말씀을 지각한다는 것은 바로 이런 것인데요, 그들은 글자 안에 무엇이 들어있는지, 심지어 어떤 단어 하면 탁 떠오르는 의미조차 전혀 모릅니다. 나라, 도시, 강과 인물 등, 말씀 내 역사, 예언 쪽에 매우 자주 등장하는 이런 것들 역시 더더욱 모릅니다. 그들은 오직 그 단어들과 이름들의 의미에 대해서만 알고 있을 뿐입니다. 그래서 낙원의 아담 하면 그들은 태고교회를 지각합니다. 물론, 그 교회 자체가 아니라 그 교회가 가졌던 주님 신앙(the faith in the Lord)을 지각하는 것이지요. 노아 하면 그들은 태고교회의 후손들과 함께 살아남아 아브람의 때까지 계속되었던 교회를 지각합니다. 아브라함 하면 천사들은 결코 아브라함 개인이 아닌, 그가 표상한 어떤 구원 신앙(a saving faith)을 지각하는 등 말이지요. 천사들은 이렇게 단어들과 이름들하고는 완전 별개인 영적, 천적인 것들을 지각합니다. This then is the internal sense of the Word, its veriest life, which does not at all appear from the sense of the letter. But so many are its arcana that volumes would not suffice for the unfolding of them. A very few only are here set forth, and those such as may confirm the fact that regeneration is here treated of, and that this proceeds from the external man to the internal. It is thus that the angels perceive the Word. They know nothing at all of what is in the letter, not even the proximate meaning of a single word; still less do they know the names of the countries, cities, rivers, and persons, that occur so frequently in the historical and prophetical parts of the Word. They have an idea only of the things signified by the words and the names. Thus by Adam in paradise they perceive the most ancient church, yet not that church, but the faith in the Lord of that church. By Noah they perceive the church that remained with the descendants of the most ancient church, and that continued to the time of Abram. By Abraham they by no means perceive that individual, but a saving faith, which he represented; and so on. Thus they perceive spiritual and celestial things entirely apart from the words and names.
