※ 더욱이, 모든 완벽성은 내적으로 갈수록 증가하고, 외적으로 갈수록 줄어든다. 내적인 것은 신성에 더 가깝고, 그 자체가 더 순수하며(in themselves pure), 반면, 외적인 것은 신성에서 더 멀고, 그 자체가 더 탁하기(in themselves grosser) 때문이다.

더욱이, 모든 완벽성은 내적으로 갈수록 증가하고, 외적으로 갈수록 줄어든다. 내적인 것은 신성에 더 가깝고, 그 자체가 더 순수하며(in themselves pure), 반면, 외적인 것은 신성에서 더 멀고, 그 자체가 더 탁하기(in themselves grosser) 때문이다.주40 천사의 완벽함은 지성, 지혜, 사랑, 선함과 그에 따르는 행복으로 이루어진다. 그러나 이런 것을 떠난 행복은 완전하지 않다. 그런 행복은 외적일 뿐, 내적이지 않기 때문이다. 가장 내적 천국의 천사들은 그 내면의 셋째 단계가 열려 있기 때문에, 그들의 완벽함은 내면의 둘째 단계가 열린 중간 천국의 천사들과는 비교할 수 없을 정도로 뛰어나다. 역시 중간 천국 천사들의 완벽함은 가장 외적 천국의 천사들을 훨씬 능가한다. Furthermore, all perfection increases toward interiors and decreases toward exteriors, since interiors are nearer to the Divine, and are in themselves pure, while exteriors are more remote from the Divine and are in themselves grosser.40 Intelligence, wisdom, love, everything good and the resulting happiness, are what constitute angelic perfection; but not happiness apart from these, for such happiness is external and not internal. Because in the angels of the inmost heaven the interiors have been opened in the third degree, their perfection immeasurably surpasses the perfection of angels in the middle heaven, whose interiors have been opened in the second degree. So the perfection of these angels exceeds in like measure the perfection of angels of the outmost heaven.

 

 

주40. 내면의 것들은 주님의 신성에 더 가깝기 때문에 더 완벽하다. Interiors are more perfect because nearer to the Divine (n. 3405, 5146, 5147). 내적인 것 안에는 외적인 것 안에서는 한 가지 두루뭉술하게(as one general thing) 나타나는 것의 수천수만 배의 것(thousands and thousands of things)이 있다. In the internal there are thousands and thousands of things that appear in the external as one general thing (n. 5707). 사람이 외적인 것들(externals) 안에 있다가 내면(interiors)을 향해 깨어나는 만큼, 그는 그만큼 더 빛 가운데로 들어가고, 그렇게 해서 지성(intelligence) 가운데로 들어간다. 이 고양(高揚)은 마치 구름이 걷히고 환해지는 것과 같다. As far as man is raised from externals toward interiors, so far he comes into light and thus into intelligence; the elevation is like rising out of a cloud into clearness (n. 4598, 6183, 6313).

 

※ 우리 지구에서 보는 저 우주의 수많은 성운은 각각 그냥 두루뭉술 어렴풋한 하나의 덩어리들로 보이지만, 그러나 얼마 전 쏘아 올린 제임스 웹 우주 망원경으로 보는 성운들은 가히 형용할 수 없는 수천수백억 또는 조 단위 별들로 이루어진 것처럼, 그리고 우리 인체 역시 겉으로 보면 하나의 덩어리이지만, 인체를 이루는 전체 피부를 비롯 그 안 모든 조직과 구성은 작은 우주라 할 수 있는, 그런 걸로 비유할 수 있습니다. 속과 겉, 내적인 것과 외적인 것, 중심과 변두리의 차이가 말입니다.
